Voter registration deadline is tomorrow

Tuesday is the last day for eligible Hoosiers to register to vote before the municipal election.

Hoosiers have until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday to register to vote online at IndianaVoters.in.gov for the Nov. 7 municipal election. Those planning to register in person have until the close of business — 4:30 p.m. — to do so at the Johnson County Voter Registration office located in the Johnson County Courthouse basement, 5 E. Jefferson St., Franklin.

Mail-in applications are also due to voter registration by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Voters can also visit any license branch by its respective close of business to register. People who choose this route should contact Johnson County Voter Registration to make sure their application is correctly sent over from the branches.

Under Indiana law, legal adults who are U.S. citizens are eligible to vote as long as they meet certain criteria.

To register, a resident must:

  • be a U.S. citizen and an Indiana resident;
  • have resided in their voting precinct at least 30 days before the next election;
  • be at least 18 years old on the day of the election;
  • not currently be in prison after being convicted of a crime.

Those who are already registered are encouraged to check their registrations before voting at indianavoters.in.gov. Early voting begins at the Johnson County Courthouse on Oct. 23.

The deadline for absentee ballot applications is noon on Oct. 26. Voters can apply online at indianavoters.in.gov or in person at Johnson County Voter Registration.

Only Johnson County residents who live within municipal boundaries can vote this year, as there are no federal, state or county seats up for grabs. While offices are on the ballot for every city and town, the only contested races include the Greenwood City Council, and town councils in Bargersville, Edinburgh, Whiteland and Prince’s Lakes.

In the coming weeks, the Daily Journal will begin previewing the contested races.
