Georg Utz employee dies in Edinburgh industrial accident

EDINBURGH — The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office is investigating an industrial accident at Georg Utz, Inc. at 12:08 p.m. Wednesday in which an employee died.

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting identified the victim as Charles Carson, 66, Elizabethtown. Edinburgh police said Carson had worked for the Utz company for several years. Utz is located at 14000 N. County Road 250W in Bartholomew County.

Nolting said Carson was working to put a mold together at the industrial manufacturer when he was struck in the head by a large piece of metal.

The mold was being suspended by a crane, and investigators believe some part of the assembly came loose resulting in a piece of the mold striking Carson in the head, Nolting said.

Carson had no viable life signs at the time that firefighters, medics and investigators arrived and his time of death is being listed at the time of dispatch, 12:08 p.m. All lifesaving measures available were undertaken at the scene, Nolting said.

An investigation continues into the death and toxicology tests are pending.

The preliminary cause of death in the case is blunt force trauma to the head, Nolting said.
