Coroner: Former Greenwood police officer’s death was natural causes

A former Greenwood police officer whose body was found in Craig Park earlier this month died of natural causes.

Zane Matthew Hennig, 27, of Greenwood, died as the result of an acute asthma exacerbation on Oct. 8, the Johnson County Coroner’s Office announced Thursday afternoon. A toxicology report came back clear and his death was ruled as natural causes.

During acute asthma exacerbation, a person’s airways become swollen. Their muscles contract and bronchial tubes narrow, and breathing typically becomes more and more difficult, according to the coroner’s office.

Evidence suggests that Hennig experienced a medical emergency on his way to an early morning deer hunt. He pulled into Craig Park to treat an acute asthma attack and treat himself with prescribed medications. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his medical emergency, the coroner’s office said.
