College notebook: Ayro making a killing for Huskies

University of Connecticut freshman Mya Ayro had eight kills in a three-set loss to Xavier, then came back the following night with a team-high 15 kills in a four-set home win over Butler. The former Greenwood star, who has reached double digits in kills eight times this season for the Huskies, then added 11 kills and two block assists in a four-set home win over Providence.

Greenwood

Manchester senior Joy Maze had 10 kills and nine digs in her team’s loss at Hanover. She followed up with 12 kills and 17 digs in a four-set victory at Franklin College.

Melia Gorrell helped Wheeling volleyball to consecutive home sweeps of West Virginia Wesleyan, Davis & Elkins and Shepherd, totaling 39 digs, 11 assists and two aces.

Wabash College linebacker Gavin Ruppert came up with 11 tackles and a quarterback hurry, but his team still came up short in a 28-24 loss at Denison.

Freshman swimmer Naomi Weaver was fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:18.42) as Southern Indiana split a three-way meet against Evansville and Valparaiso.

Center Grove

UCLA running back Carson Steele gained 110 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 7-yard touchdown run, but the Bruins took a 36-24 defeat at No. 12 Oregon State.

Kansas defensive end Austin Booker tied for the team lead with nine tackles as the Jayhawks lost, 39-32, at Oklahoma State.

Indiana University quarterback Tayven Jackson was 7 of 13 passing for 52 yards and two interceptions in a 52-7 loss at second-ranked Michigan. Matt Hohlt made one tackle for the Hoosiers.

Butler middle blocker Grace Boggess had nine kills, three block assists and a service ace in a road sweep of Providence. She finished with six kills in a four-set loss at UConn.

Eckerd defensive specialist Ashley Eck finished with 17 digs in a four-set win over Lynn and 12 more in a three-set sweep of Barry.

Concordia (Michigan) freshman Julianna Weems had four kills in a loss at Lawrence Tech and four more in a win over Northwestern Ohio. She then delivered 12 kills and five block assists in a four-set victory over Michigan-Dearborn.

Ball State sophomore swimmer Ben Clarkston was fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.49) and swam on a pair of runner-up relays in a dual-meet win over Illinois-Chicago.

Sam Smith won the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.97) and finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:47.65) as Southern Indiana split a three-way meet with Evansville and Valparaiso; teammate Garrett Crist was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:59.61). The two former Trojans swam together on the Eagles’ 400 medley relay.

Sophomore Kiersten Smith was third in the 50 freestyle (26.51) and the 1,000 free (11:47.03) as the Lewis University women defeated Illinois Wesleyan in a dual meet.

Freshman golfer Sage Parsetich shot a two-round total of 163, tying for 15th individually as the Indiana Wesleyan women finished first at the Saints Classic in South Bend.

Franklin

Taylor’s Ellie Beavins was seventh individually with a two-round total of 162 to help the Trojans wrap their fall season by winning the team title at the Red Wolves Fall Invitational in Muncie.

Junior swimmer Ethan Pheifer helped Ball State win its dual meet against Illinois-Chicago, winning the 100-yard backstroke (51.68), finishing second in the 100 freestyle (46.77) and swimming on two first-place relays (200 medley and 400 freestyle).

Whiteland

Aquinas College freshman swimmer Amelia Edens continued to rewrite the school record book, besting her own mark in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.99) and leading off a record-setting medley relay (1:55.18). Edens also picked up an NAIA provisional qualifying time in the 200 freestyle (2:00.25).

Roncalli

Michael Hegwood (Greenwood) had two tackles and Owen Volk (Greenwood) added one in Wabash College’s 28-24 loss at Denison.
