GREENWOOD, IN
Ruth Elizabeth Althoff, 91, passed away Monday morning, October 23, 2023. She was a long-time resident of Greenwood. She was born November 8, 1931 in Versailles, IN to the late Henry Hurelbrink and Louise Bokenkamp Hurelbrink. Ruth graduated from Versailles High School in 1949. She was married September 12, 1953, to Paul Althoff, with whom she enjoyed a loving marriage of 54 years. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2008.
Ruth was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean, IN, and later was a member of
Concordia Lutheran Church in Greenwood and Resurrection Lutheran Church in Indianapolis. While at
Concordia, she assisted her husband as financial secretary of the church. She was also involved in many
Bible studies, and she helped in the preparation of the church bulletins at both local churches.
She was employed by State Farm Insurance for over forty years as a secretary to several different agents in the Greenwood and Mooresville areas.
Ruth loved playing all types of card games, especially euchre and 500. She and Paul enjoyed traveling the United States on bus tours with friends. BINGO and visiting casinos were another favorite past time. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, of which she was known for patting, rocking, and singing to all the babies.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan (David) Campbell of Greenwood and son, Steven Althoff of Cross Plains, IN, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her father and mother, sister, Irma Obendorf Rohls, brothers, Robert and Ralph Hurelbrink, nephew, Kenny Obendorf, niece, Phyllis Armbrecht, and great niece, Megan Mulford.
Services are being held on Monday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, 305 Howard Road, Greenwood, IN with calling beginning at 9:45 a.m. until the time of service. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Olean, IN.
