Freeze warning in effect starting Monday night

A freeze warning is in effect for the area starting tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Johnson County and other surrounding counties that’ll be in effect from 10 p.m. Monday night until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 22 degrees are expected.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, according to the weather service.

People should take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, the pipes should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing, the weather service said.

Meteorologists also say that brief snow showers with reduced visibility are possible Tuesday afternoon.
