Connie Owens

GREENWOOD

Connie Owens, (81) gained her wings on early Monday morning, October 16th. She was with her husband of 49 years, Leonard L Owens, her son, Christopher Allen Tompkins, and while her very special daughter, Stephanie Deann Tompkins, was tucked away peacefully sleeping in her room.

Connie was an independent, extremely outgoing, always-on-the-go, gregarious, fun-loving, and spirited (!!), take-charge woman. She LOVED to travel and to experience new things. She was an avid lover of anything theatre-related, especially Broadway shows. Her adventurous spirit to explore and experience new places took her on many, many, many memorable adventures to California, Florida, Vegas, New York City, Washington, DC, Chicago, Hawaii, Canada, Texas, Arizona, and more. Her favorite pastimes were shopping and dining out – always on the lookout for unique boutiques and dining out albeit a 5-star restaurant or a small, intimate “hole-in-the-wall.” She had a thirst for knowledge and loved to read to gain greater insight, understanding, perspectives, and expand her education on so many different topics including education, physical and mental health, local, state, and federal laws, and biographies.

Connie was HEAVILY active and involved for many years with the Johnson County Association of Retarded Citizens (JCARC) having served on and led the Board. Her tireless work during that time with the Indiana State Legislature helped pave the way for group homes with those with special needs. Professionally, she was a realtor and later auditor for the Johnson County Assessor’s office. She NEVER missed a Home-A-Rama, Flower &Patio Show, festivals, concert or show including attending the last show ELVIS ever performed here in Indiana.

Connie was an outspoken advocate of equal rights for women, those with special needs, the gay community, and minorities. She didn’t see color, she saw a person. She didn’t see different, she saw equal.
