Throwback Thursday: Nov. 2

News from around Johnson County as reported on Nov. 2 in the pages of the Daily Journal and the Franklin Evening Star from the last 111 years.

On this day in 2006, the main story on the front page of the Daily Journal was about an annual Halloween tradition in Nineveh — toilet-papering an intersection.

“You know it’s Halloween in Nineveh when the rolls of toilet paper start soaring through the air,” the story began.

Local residents gathered at the town’s four-way stop at Nineveh Road and County Road 750S every year to deck the town in the streaming paper. The toilet-papering tradition had started nearly four decades earlier, residents said.

Paper streamed from the power lines crossing over the street. White strips covered the road, the trees, even the vending machines at the hardware store.

“It’s kind of eerily pretty,” Janice Clark said. She and her husband Bud Clark owned Bud’s Bait and Tackle at the intersection.

The couple and other business owners provided the rolls of toilet paper to support the festivities.

The Halloween tradition also marked the final day Bud’s Bait and Tackle was open for the year. The seasonal shop closed after decorating for the holiday and passing out the toilet paper.

In 2006, the Clarks provided three cases of toilet paper, about 175 rolls, Bud Clark said.

Hundreds of people came out Tuesday to throw the rolls, he said.
