Daily Journal welcomes new reporter

The Daily Journal is proud to announce the hiring of Jayden Kennett.

Her name might sound familiar to long-time readers. Kennett was the Daily Journal’s Hoosier State Press Association Pulliam Intern during the summer of 2019.

We are proud to welcome her back to the newsroom after she’s grown more as a reporter following her graduation from the University of Indianapolis in 2021 and a year-and-a-half with the Indianapolis Recorder, the longest-running Black newspaper in Indiana.

“I am excited to be back at the paper that sparked my love for journalism,” Kennett said.

An award-winning environmental reporter, Kennett recently won the Nina Mason Pulliam Environmental Journalism Award in this year’s HSPA contest. With her expertise, the Daily Journal is proud to add more coverage of the environment and explore how climate change is expected to impact Johnson County.

In her former role at the Recorder, she also covered Indianapolis government and housing.

Kennett will cover education, the environment, and small town government, including the towns of Bargersville, Edinburgh, New Whiteland, Trafalgar and Prince’s Lakes. She will also cover the Center Grove, Edinburgh and Indian Creek school systems.

Kennett grew up on a farm in Greene County, but has lived in Indianapolis for six years. She’s familiar with the area and ready to hit the ground running.

“Kennett’s expertise in covering both the environment and government in Indianapolis will be a huge asset to readers and a great addition to our team,” said, Leeann Doerflein, editor of the Daily Journal. “Please join me in giving her a warm welcome back to the Daily Journal.”
