College notebook: Former Indian Creek guard starting at Spring Arbor

Spring Arbor guard Abby Fleetwood has helped the women’s basketball team to a 5-0 start to the season.

The freshman, an Indian Creek graduate, scored six points, grabbed five rebounds and passed out four assists in a 99-75 victory over Indiana Northwest. Fleetwood followed with 14 points and seven boards in a 105-79 win at Olivet Nazarene.

Center Grove

Butler freshman guard Ethan McComb hit his lone 3-point attempt in the Bulldogs’ 91-56 win over Southeast Missouri State and duplicated the feat in the team’s 91-47 defeat of East Tennessee State.

Bellarmine guard Landin Hacker scored three points in an 83-75 loss at Kansas State.

Truman State guard Claire Rake had 11 points, three rebounds and a steal in her team’s 85-68 win at Cedarville.

Junior guard Mary Wilson had three points and two steals for Denver in its 67-51 win over North Alabama, and six points and a block in a 58-41 home loss to Wyoming.

Senior guard Ella Thompson finished with 19 points, five assists and four rebounds as Bentley women’s basketball won its opener against Daemen, 76-61. She added 11 points, five boards and three assists in the Falcons’ 92-57 win over Roberts Wesleyan.

Vermont lost at Providence, 57-47, despite senior guard Emma Utterback posting team-high totals in points (15) and assists (seven), while tying for top rebounding honors (five).

Eckerd College volleyball dropped a five-set match to Palm Beach Atlantic despite the 25 digs and four assists of junior defensive specialist Ashley Eck. She added 13 digs and two assists in a four-set loss to Nova Southeastern, and 13 digs and two assists in a home loss to Tampa.

Sophomore 149-pounder Hayden Watson won his match against Williams College, 18-8, as The Citadel wrestling team took part in the George Mason Duals.

Wisconsin volleyball lost only its second match of the season, a four-set decision at No. 15 Penn State. Senior setter Madison Hammill finished with 11 assists, eight digs and a service ace.

Sophomore defensive end Austin Booker made four tackles and forced a fumble for Kansas in its 16-13 home loss to Texas Tech.

UCLA junior running back Carson Steele carried the ball 11 times for 33 yards in the Bruins’ 17-7 home loss to Arizona State.

Defensive lineman Lucas Hunter made three tackles for Indiana State, which picked up its first win of the season with a 27-6 decision over visiting Western Illinois.

Indiana Wesleyan freshman Nolan Foley attempted six punts for a 42.5-yard average in the Wildcats’ 24-10 loss at Concordia (Michigan).

Greenwood

Taylor women’s basketball player Quinn Kelly had six points, four boards and three assists in the team’s 93-70 loss to Rio Grande (Ohio), and added seven points and five rebounds in a 78-64 setback against St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Wabash College linebacker Gavin Ruppert made eight tackles in the Little Giants’ 33-30 double overtime loss to DePauw in the annual Monon Bell game.

Connecticut volleyball lost in straight sets at Butler, though Huskies’ freshman Mya Ayro did lead her team with 14 kills. She added three kills and a dig as UConn dropped a four-set decision at Xavier.

Wheeling volleyball improved its season record to 22-7 with a three-set sweep of West Liberty. Sophomore defensive specialist Melia Gorrell finished with seven digs and three assists.

Franklin

Franklin College freshman Dylan Beverly finished with eight points, five blocks and four rebounds in the men’s basketball team’s 79-70 loss to Berea. He added six points, three blocks and two boards in a 67-65 defeat of Millikin.

Huntington women’s basketball scored a 64-53 decision over IU Southeast with guard Kyndell Jochim finishing with three points and two rebounds. In an 86-75 triumph over IU East, Jochim had nine points and two boards.

Senior tight end Drew Byerly made two catches totaling 47 yards for Marian football in its 24-14 victory over visiting Siena Heights.

Whiteland

Indiana’s Claire Overfelt ran a time of 21 minutes, 57.2 seconds to place 81st at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional cross country meet.

Edinburgh

Riley Palmeter made two tackles for Marian football as the Knights closed the regular season with a 24-14 win over visiting Siena Heights.

Greenwood Christian

Junior forward Styles McCorkle had five points and four rebounds for Wabash College in a 72-67 home loss to Anderson.

Junior guard Izzy Reed had four points, two rebounds and two steals in an 83-63 win over Roosevelt as Indiana Wesleyan women’s basketball won both of its games at the Leah Whittaker Memorial.
