Report released for fatal Greenwood car crash

A fatal car crash in Greenwood also injured an 11-month-old Wednesday morning, a report shows.

First responders were called to a serious vehicle crash at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Main Street and Commerce Parkway West Drive. The crash involved a car and semi, according to a Greenwood Police Department accident report.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The Johnson County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Michaela Elaine Norton, 26, of Greenwood. Her cause and manner of death are pending toxicology and autopsy reports, the coroner’s office said.

There was also a 11-month-old juvenile in the car, who was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, according to the report.

The driver of the semi told police he was driving east on Main Street after exiting Interstate 65 when Norton, who was driving westbound when the car reportedly swerved into his lane. The semi did not have enough time to react, and the vehicles hit each other head on, the report says.

The semi driver then lost control and veered north, going airborne before hitting a parking lot curb. He was uninjured in the crash, the report shows.

Main Street was closed for several hours Wednesday morning as investigators looked into the cause of the crash.
