College notebook: Greenwood grads pick up postseason football honors

Wabash College football players Cameron Ford and Gavin Ruppert, both Greenwood graduates, were named to the All-North Coast Atlantic Conference second team.

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Ford is a junior offensive lineman for the Little Giants, who finished 7-3 this season. Ruppert, a sophomore linebacker, led the team in tackles with 73.

Center Grove

Senior guard Ella Thompson scored a game-high 19 points, including the 1,000th of her career, as Bentley edged St. Anselm, 66-61. The Falcons are ranked 16th in Division II.

Vermont women’s basketball lost its three games at the Florida Gulf Coast Showcase. Senior guard Emma Utterback went for 18, 14 and 16 points to move into the 10th spot all-time on the school’s career scoring list with 1,379 points.

Truman State senior Claire Rake scored seven points in the team’s 76-71 loss at McKendree and had five points, four rebounds and four assists in a 72-68 home loss against Lewis.

Kansas sophomore defensive end Austin Booker made eight tackles and broke up a pass as the Jayhawks’ football team won at Cincinnati, 49-16.

Freshman punter Nolan Foley netted an average of 33.2 yards on his five attempts to help Indiana Wesleyan defeat Morningside, 24-21, in the second round of the NAIA playoffs.

UCLA running back Carson Steele carried the ball 12 times for 53 yards in a 33-7 loss to California. The junior also made three receptions for 43 yards.

Franklin

University of Indianapolis men’s soccer player Owen Atkison, a graduate student, was one of three Greyhounds named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association All-Midwest Region second team. He previously was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference third team and to the CSC DII Academic All-District Team.

Marian’s football season concluded with a 9-2 record as the Knights lost to Saint Xavier, 31-21, in the first round of the NAIA tournament. Senior tight end Drew Byerly had two catches for 10 yards and a score, and carried the ball twice, producing yet another touchdown.

Freshman center Dylan Beverly had eight points, three rebounds and two blocked shots for Franklin College men’s basketball in a 77-68 victory at Dominican. He added two points and a rebound in a 95-85 loss at Centre.

Radford women’s basketball lost both games at the Puerto Rico Clasico. with sophomore Ashlyn Traylor-Walker scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds against Indiana State and following with 19 points and four boards against Northern Illinois.

Whiteland

Freshman guard Austin Willoughby finished with seven points, four rebounds and two steals for Manchester men’s basketball in an 88-70 loss at Kalamazoo.

Greenwood Christian

Junior Styles McCorkle scored six points and older brother Champ McCorkle added four points, three rebounds and three steals for Wabash College men’s basketball in an 84-42 defeat of Rose-Hulman.
