Indy man killed in fatal Greenwood shooting

An Indianapolis man is dead following a fatal shooting Sunday night in Greenwood.

First responders were called to the 2000 block of Liberty Way Drive in the city’s Central Park neighborhood around 7 p.m. Sunday on a report of shots fired. This neighborhood is located immediately west of Grassy Creek Elementary School.

In the initial call, a neighbor reported hearing a gunshot and then saw two people running from a car. One male was found dead in the car, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant chief of Greenwood police.

Johnson County Coroner’s Office on Monday morning identified the man as 18-year-old Ethan J. David of Indianapolis. An autopsy was scheduled for later on Monday.

A suspect has not yet been taken into custody, Fillenwarth said.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” he said.

Detectives are awaiting results from the autopsy and search warrants, Fillenwarth said. They are also collecting doorbell camera footage from the neighborhood where the shooting happened, he said.

“It’s been 24 hours. Those guys are knee-deep in it,” Fillenwarth said. “I think we’ll get answers, it’s just going to take a while to get all that stuff.”

Anyone with any information about the shooting is encouraged to contact Greenwood Police by calling 317-882-9191 or calling Johnson County Dispatch at 317-346-6336.

Sunday night’s homicide marks the fifth one the city of Greenwood has seen in 2023.

The first was a road rage shooting at the County Line Road exit of Interstate 65 on Jan. 10. Indianapolis resident Richard Donnell Hamilton, 43, was killed in that shooting. That investigation remains ongoing and no one has been formally charged.

The second homicide occurred on March 8 at Ale Emporium off County Line Road. Timothy A. Sannito, 52, of Indianapolis, was allegedly shot and killed by Marco Antonio Gonzalez, 25. Gonzalez has been charged with Sannito’s murder, but the case is on hold as Gonzalez was found incompetent to stand trial last month.

A third shooting occurred in the 1200 block of Odell Lane on May 15. Jerimiah S. Martin, 20 of Indianapolis, was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds. An Indianapolis 16-year-old told police they shot him and said Martin and another man, Marcus D. Jones, Jr., 20 of Indianapolis, threatened him and attempted to rob him. Police say the shooting stemmed from a home invasion and drug deal gone wrong.

In the fourth shooting, Jacob M. Moran, 22, was also charged with murder and domestic battery in the presence of a child less than 16 years old as a Level 6 felony after prosecutors say he both battered and later fatally shot his father, 45-year-old Greenwood resident Shaun M. Moran, on Aug. 28. Two domestic battery incidents occurred several hours before the shooting on Euclid Avenue.

This year’s homicide numbers are, so far, slightly lower than last year’s record number of six for the city.

Editor’s note: Additional homicides were added to this story after a reporting error left two off the initial recap of homicides in the city.
