Bargersville officers commended for saving woman from car fire

Two Bargersville Police officers are being commended for their actions to save a woman from a burning car.

A witness told police a vehicle drove off the road near 7100 W. Stones Crossing Road at around 6:32 p.m. Dec. 8. The car ran into a tree at what looked like a high rate of speed, the accident report says.

When Bargersville officers arrived at the scene the car’s front end was on fire and the driver, a 71-year-old from Peru, Indiana, was injured and trapped inside.

Bargersville Police shared a body camera video on their Facebook page depicting how the officers sprang into action as the first on the scene. They say Officer Cody St. John and Officer Joshua Wheat headed toward the burning car “without hesitation.”

The video shows a picture-in-picture view of one officer extinguishing the fire while the other helps the woman out of her SUV through the hatchback. The process was difficult because there were several obstacles in the vehicle and she was complaining of knee and ankle pain. The officers persevered and together helped her to safety.

She was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the accident report says.

If the officers hadn’t responded so quickly, the woman might not have fared so well.

”Due to their quick actions and brave efforts, the driver was able to be removed from the vehicle and brought to safety. This is a fine example of these officer’s commitment and dedication to keeping the citizens of our community safe and the selflessness with which they serve,” the post says.
