Grizzly Cub boys win Mid-State title

Franklin’s boys took home top honors at Saturday’s Mid-State Conference meet in Plainfield, totaling 499 points to win going away. Aleksandr Ries was first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and also swam on two of the Grizzly Cubs’ three victorious relays. Isaac Layton (200 freestyle) and Franco Chirinos (500 free) also turned in first-place efforts. The Franklin girls were narrowly defeated by the host Quakers, 476-469, despite wins in both freestyle relays and individual victories from Lili Ratzlaff (200 IM, 100 free) and Reagan Graves (200 and 500 free).

Greenwood finished fourth in the boys standings and fifth in the girls; Whiteland’s girls were sixth and its boys seventh.

Trojans win top-five showdown

Class 4A No. 4 Center Grove created some second-half separation with some big 3-point baskets and held off a late rally to defeat fifth-ranked Jennings County, 64-57, in a battle of state title contenders on Saturday evening. Lilly Bischoff led the Trojans (17-1) with 17 points, 14 of those in the first half, Rachel Wirts finished with 16 points and Audrey Annee scored all of her 14 in the second half. Ava Grant (10 points) and Aubrie Booker (seven) rounded out the Center Grove scoring.

Braves get past Eagles

Faith Wiseman’s 23 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots helped Class 3A No. 5 Indian Creek pull out a 54-47 victory at Indian Creek. Lauren Foster added 11 points for the Braves (14-4, 7-0 WIC).

Cougars throttle Shortridge

Max Booher scored 26 points, including the 1,000th of his career on the game’s first basket, to lead Class A No. 6 Greenwood Christian to a comfortable 58-29 home win over Shortridge on Saturday. Noah Reed and Ben Comerford each added eight points for the Cougars (8-3), who host Indian Creek in the first round of the Johnson County tournament on Tuesday.

Schmitz goes off in Center Grove win

Joey Schmitz erupted for a career-high 39 points, hitting nine 3-pointers, as host Center Grove topped Jennings County, 73-66. Will Spellman added 10 points for the Trojans (7-4), followed by Peyton Byrd with eight and Dylan Meador with seven.

Men’s basketball ekes out road win

Cooper Matthews’ four free throws in the last 21 seconds were the difference in Franklin College’s 82-78 win at Bluffton on Saturday. Malachi Archey and Cody Samples had 14 points each for the Grizzlies (6-7, 4-2 HCAC), followed by Braden Flanagan with 13 and Ryan Bostic with 11.

Women’s basketball comes up short

A cold shooting night doomed Franklin College in a 72-54 loss at Bluffton. The Grizzlies (9-4, 4-2 HCAC), who hit just 21 of 69 shots from the floor, got 12 points from Jordan Coon, 11 from Brooke Grinstead and nine rebounds from Payton Seay.

Swimming and diving competes in Kentucky

Franklin College’s men were second and the women third in the Colonel Classic, which concluded Saturday at Centre. The Grizzly men got event wins from Kosmo Wojack (400 IM, 200 butterfly) and Zachary Jackson-Blaine (50 freestyle) while the women took the 800 freestyle relay and got individual victories from Samantha Phillips (500 free, 200 fly), Celeste Hollis (100 fly, 100 free), Caileigh McCafferty (200 IM) and Kaleigh Schuler (1-meter diving).
