Gillin resigns after two seasons as Indian Creek football coach

Casey Gillin, who posted a 15-8 record in two seasons as head coach at Indian Creek High School, resigned on Wednesday.

The record-setting former Braves’ quarterback will become the offensive coordinator at Mooresville. The Pioneers are coached by Gillin’s father, Mike, who served as Indian Creek’s head coach for 16 seasons (2001-16).

“I appreciate Indian Creek giving me the opportunity to come back home. My wife (Katie) and I love the school, and love the community,” said Casey Gillin, 39, a 2003 Indian Creek graduate who led his alma mater to an 8-4 record this past fall (including a 4-0 mark in the Western Indiana Conference).

“My dad is close to the end coaching-wise, and I want to walk off the field with him that last time.”

Mike Gillin, who turns 73 on Feb. 19, was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in June 2014. The start of the 2024 high school football season will be his 46th as a head coach in Indiana; he was at Tri-West and Decatur Central before coming to Johnson County.

The elder Gillin owns a career record of 364-145, making him the third-winningest active prep football coach in the state and fourth overall. He needs only five victories to move past former Jasper coach Jerry Brewer into the third spot in the latter category.

Casey Gillin, who also taught and was the athletic director at Indian Creek Middle School, resigned from those duties as well. He and a friend, Josh Lewis, run a property management company together; the two Gillins also stay busy operating G2 WINS, where they train future quarterbacks.

Next season will be a return to the Mooresville program for Casey Gillin. He was the Pioneers’ offensive coordinator the 2020 and 2021 seasons before taking the job at Indian Creek.

“The biggest thing for me is our relationship. We’ve been so close for so long,” Casey said of his father. “There are only so many years I’m going to be able to coach with my dad. Our connection through football is the biggest thing.”
