GFD: Keep kids off frozen ponds

The Greenwood Fire Department is encouraging parents to keep an eye on children near frozen ponds.

With cold temperatures, a majority of ponds have frozen over. However, ice is not thick enough to safely walk or play on. Parents are asked to warn their kids not to play on the ice. If they fall in, they may not make it out, according to the Greenwood Fire Department.

When kids are spotted playing on the ice, fire officials encourage people to find their parents and make sure they know the dangers of playing on ice.

Anyone who witnesses someone falling through ice should call 911 immediately and should not attempt a rescue. Without proper training and equipment, the rescuer could end up in the same situation, according to the fire department.
