UPDATE: Johnson County assisting Morgan County after deputy shot

UPDATE 10:48 A.M.

More information was released about the incident during a press conference at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Morgan County Sheriff Rich Myers identified the injured deputy as Mallory K. Schwab and said she was shot once in the shoulder.

She is “in great shape” and is “alert, awake and talking,” Myers said.

The scene in rural Martinsville is still active, but the community is not in any danger. Morgan and Johnson County deputies and other agencies have the situation “in control and confined,” Myers said.

The incident began after a teenager reported seeing a suicidal post on social media. The post was from a person associated with the address. Deputies went to the house, 7000 block of Beech Grove Road, Martinsville, for a welfare check, he said.

Deputies knocked but no one answered. They then walked around the house to see if they could detect any motion inside the house. That’s when a shot was fired and it struck Schwab, Myers said.

As of the press conference at about 10 a.m., police were still trying to get in contact with the person inside the house, he said.

Schwab is recovering at Methodist Hospital. She has worked for Morgan County Sheriff’s Office for only a month but previously worked for Martinsville Police for 4.5 years. An Army reservist, she is described as being dedicated to her work and her country, Myers said.

The community is wishing her and the sheriff’s department well, he said.
