Long-time Greenwood judge rejoins Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office

A long-time Johnson County judge couldn’t stay out of the courtroom for long.

Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner has tapped former Greenwood City Court Judge Lewis Gregory to fill a deputy prosecutor position in his office.

“Our office is fortunate to be able to snag a talent like Lew,” Hamner said in a statement on his hiring. “When Lew previously worked for me he tried many of the highest profile cases our office had to deal with, including convicting two murderers. He had a memorable and impressive win record at trial.”

For the past 28 years, Gregory has served as Greenwood City Court judge. He made history in 1999 when he founded the Greenwood Recovery Court — the first certified drug treatment court in the United States.

Before taking the bench he was a deputy prosecutor for both Johnson and Marion counties. During his legal career which spans 35 years Gregory has been a prolific trial lawyer, having tried to jury 86 cases with an approximately 98% win rate. While working in Johnson County, he handled felony cases in Johnson Circuit Court.

Before working as a deputy prosecutor, he was chairman of the Indiana Parole Board.

Gregory and Hamner have a long relationship, first working together under former Marion County prosecutor Steve Goldsmith.

“I am delighted to be working with Lance again,” Gregory said in a statement on his hiring. “And I’m looking forward to getting back to trial work. It’s always been my first love in the legal field.”

Adding Gregory to staff brings yet another experienced legal mind to work for Johnson County, Hamner said.

“One of the goals I set when I took office was to attract top legal talent — experienced, formidable trial lawyers so that we can protect the public by winning in court. We have had great success at that,” Hamner said. “Our trial lawyers have an average of 18 years of actual courtroom experience and have successfully tried literally hundreds of cases. I hope that gives our citizens a profound feeling of confidence and a sense of security.”
