Morgan County deputy shot; teen suspect found dead after SWAT incident

Johnson County’s SWAT team responded to an incident involving an injured Morgan County deputy Tuesday.

At around 7:30 a.m., Morgan County deputies responded to check the welfare of a person who made a “post of a concerning nature” in the 7000 block of Beech Grove Road, Martinsville, said Rich Myers, Morgan County sheriff.

Deputies split up to look around the property, with someone knocking on the door while others looked around the perimeter to check for motion inside the home. While Deputy Mallory K. Schwab was checking for motion, a shot rang out from inside the house and she was hit in the shoulder, Myers said during a press conference.

Deputies at the scene rendered her first aid and she was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Later on Tuesday, Myers said Schwab was “in great shape” and “alert, awake and talking.”

Schwab has worked for the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office for only a month but previously worked for Martinsville Police for over four years. An Army reservist, she is described as being dedicated to her work and her country.

Following the shooting, agencies from all around including the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police were called to assist.

Over several hours, officers at the scene repeatedly tried to make contact with the person inside the house. They took steps including calling them, using non-lethal gas and a drone before eventually sending officers into the house, Myers said.

A 15-year-old male was found deceased in a bedroom of the home. His cause of death wasn’t released and is still under investigation, officials said at the press conference.

The welfare check stemmed from a teen reporting a concerning social media post to police. Myers said the teen did the right thing by reporting the post and he wishes the incident had gone a different way.

ISP is leading the still ongoing investigation.
