College notebook: Messer picks up heptathlon win for IU men’s track

Freshman Garrett Messer, a Center Grove graduate, won the heptathlon for the Indiana University men’s track and field team at the Hoosiers’ indoor invitational with 4,691 points. Indiana State freshman Parker Doyle reached the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.36 seconds.

Center Grove

IUPUI sophomore sprinter Skyler Sichting ran a personal-best time of 9.31 seconds to advance to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles at the Butler Invitational.

Truman State guard Claire Rake scored five points, grabbed two rebounds and had two assists in the team’s 92-82 loss to Drury.

Ella Thompson finished with four points, three rebounds and an assist for Bentley in a 67-50 home win over American International.

Greenwood

Anderson University men’s basketball player Gavin Dowling had 10 points, eight rebounds and a blocked shot for the Ravens in their 95-77 home win over Franklin College. In a 108-68 victory at Defiance, Dowling finished with 10 points, 14 rebounds and three steals.

Sophomore Quinn Kelly had three points, four rebounds and four assists for Taylor in its 67-45 victory at Bethel College.

University of Indianapolis sophomore Dylan Mayhew achieved a best of 57 feet, 8½ inches in the weighted throw as the Greyhounds competed at the Butler Invitational.

Franklin College senior Mallory Watson was fifth in the mile in 5:37.39 as the Grizzlies participated in the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes event.

Whiteland

Manchester junior guard Logan Willoughby had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in the men’s basketball team’s 67-52 win at Rose-Hulman.

Despite a time of 8:17.60, Liberty redshirt sophomore Will Jefferson finished runner-up in the 3,000-meter run at the Brant Tolsma Invitational.

Bella Jackson finished fourth in the high jump with a top effort of 5-8½ as Lipscomb women’s track and field competed in the Vanderbilt Invitational. The sophomore was also 30th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.37 seconds).

Ball State freshman Brooklyn Taylor placed ninth in the shot put (40-9) during the Bob Parks Memorial Invitational at Eastern Michigan.

Aquinas College freshman Amelia Edens was part of the 200-yard medley relay that established a new program standard of 1:53.53 in a women’s swim meet against Davenport and Hillsdale. Edens also placed second in the 200 backstroke and fourth in the 200 freestyle.

Franklin

Franklin College men’s basketball dropped a 95-77 decision at Anderson despite the 12 points, two rebounds and two assists of freshman forward Dylan Beverly.

Sophomore Ashlyn Traylor-Walker had 17 points, eight boards and two blocks for Radford women’s basketball in a 65-60 loss at USC Upstate. She finished with nine points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists in a 59-46 decision over UNC Ashville.

Huntington freshman Kyndell Jochim had eight points, four rebounds and two assists in the team’s 79-61 win over Goshen College.

Freshman Brooke Coffman scored a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles for Marian University at the Indiana Tech Invite. She was also part of the second-place 4×400 relay, and took fourth in the high jump and fifth in long jump.

Eli Cochrane and Drew McGaha were part of the Franklin College 4×400 relay effort that finished sixth in 3:34.22 at the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Spikes meet.

Indian Creek

Spring Arbor guard Abby Fleetwood had seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in the team’s 69-68 win at St. Francis.

Marian University runner Luci Woodrum placed 14th in the 1,000-meter run at the Indiana Tech Invite.

Greenwood Christian

Manchester men’s basketball won at home over Mount St. Joseph, 75-71, with freshman Blake Shewmaker scoring seven points to go along with his steal and two rebounds. He scored six points in a 67-52 victory at Rose-Hulman.
