Grizzly Cubs, Trojans dominate prelims

Host Franklin and defending champion Center Grove set themselves up for another intriguing 1-2 battle this weekend, grabbing the lion’s share of the top seeds during preliminary swims at the Franklin Sectional on Thursday evening.

The Grizzly Cubs advanced 23 of a possible 24 swims into championship finals, while the Trojans had 21 of 24; both teams advanced all three of their relays. Center Grove’s Henry Lyness enters Saturday as the top seed in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke; teammate Max Hite was first in the 200 freestyle and the Trojans’ two freestyle relays also finished on top. Franklin got first-place showings from Alijah Hall (200 IM), Gabe Holtz (100 free), Franco Chirinos (500 free), Lucas Ackermann (100 breaststroke) and the 200 medley relay.

Greenwood and Whiteland each put three individuals and three relays into A finals; Indian Creek advanced one individual and two relays.

Diving prelims will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with all event finals to follow at 1 p.m.

Women’s swimming & diving leads HCAC

Franklin College’s women took first in every swimming event Thursday to extend their lead through the midway point of the HCAC championships in Terre Haute. The Grizzlies, who lead second-place Transylvania by a 366-222 margin, won the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays and got individual victories from Samantha Phillips in the 500 freestyle, Caileigh McCafferty in the 200 individual medley and Celeste Hollis in the 50 free.

On the men’s side, Franklin sits in second place 73 points behind Rose-Hulman. The Grizzlies got a win from Zachary Jackson-Blaine in the 50 freestyle and won both the 200 free and 400 medley relays.
