Forrest “Tug” Sutton

Forrest “Tug” Sutton, 79 of Greenwood, Indiana (Smith Valley) passed away on February 14th, 2024, at Community Hospital South surrounded by his loving family. In Tug’s final days he spent time at his youngest granddaughter’s soccer game and came home to celebrate Valentine’s day with his beloved wife Marilyn.

Tug was born on December 28th, 1944, at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana to Forrest and Norma Sutton (Sells), both deceased. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty one years, Marilyn Sutton (Collins) of Greenwood; daughter, Sonya (Chuck) Mayo of Greenwood; brothers, Steve (Cindy) Sutton of Florida and Geoff Sutton of Greenwood; granddaughters, Rylie (Luke) Coryell of Trafalgar, Kamryn Mayo, Charlee Mayo, and Emersyn Mayo of Greenwood; great- grandchild, Colt Coryell, as well as several very special nieces and nephews that always held a special place in his heart. He was preceded in passing by his parents and son Bobby Sutton.

Tug attended Center Grove High School where he graduated in 1963. Tug was employed by Standard Grocery while being a student. Tug loved attending all of his grandchildren’s soccer, volleyball, and basketball games. Tug always prioritized his family first. He enjoyed the yearly trips to Gatlinburg, Tennessee with his wife to celebrate their wedding anniversary. He always enjoyed the summer vacations to Daytona Beach Florida with the “Daytona Peeps”, where he loved drinking coffee and watching the sunrise. He loved the Sutton Christmas Party and just visiting with friends and family at all the gatherings at his daughter’s house. He was always making sure his family was safe and sent weekly weather reports to keep them aware. Tug enjoyed fifties and sixties music, fishing, reading and the show Seinfeld. He also enjoyed their Friday night Mexican dinners and fish fries with friends. Tug was an all-around family guy which is where he spent most of days. Tug was a dedicated servant of all people everywhere he went. He was employed at Eli Lilly where he worked in the mail room, and security for forty years when he retired in 2005.

Tug also served as Johnson County Coroner, Emergency Management Director, Bargersville Fire Department Fire District Board, White River Township Fire Department Fire District Board, 911 Committee and Greenwood Fire Department Merit Board. He also served on White River Advisory Board, Johnson County Red Cross Board and Chair, Johnson County LEPC, Johnson County COAD and Central 9 CERT Board, and as a precinct committeeman. Tug was proud of the twenty-five years of service at the Bargersville Fire Department, and serving as Chief for six of those. He also worked for Myers Ambulance as an EMT. Tug enjoyed sharing his love for public service with younger generations. Tug was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

A Service will be conducted to celebrate the life of Tug on Thursday, February 22, 2024, with visitation starting at noon, followed by the service at 4 pm at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory-Greenwood Chapel, 481 West Main Street, Greenwood, IN 46142. Memorial Contributions may be made to National Multiple Sclerosis Society or The National Pancreas Foundation.
