GPL Column: Read Across America with Bluey Week is child’s play

The Greenwood Public Library is going blue for the upcoming Read Across America with Bluey event March 4 to 8.

In a colorful celebration of early learning and family engagement, the Greenwood Public Library will host a five-day event centered around our favorite blue heeler from the beloved Australian children’s television series, “Bluey.”

Throughout the week, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Bluey in person, along with the library’s literacy mascot, Fable. In addition to meeting Bluey and Fable, families can enjoy Bluey-themed games and activities in the Kids Department and explore the Exhibit Hall, complete with a backdrop for photos, as well as activities in the Studio for even more Bluey-related fun.

Whether it’s engaging in interactive displays or participating in themed crafts, there will be no shortage of fun activities to enjoy.

This event not only celebrates the joy of reading but also highlights the importance of creative play in early childhood development. It’s been said that play is the business of children. It’s how they learn, and creative play is a foundational building block of early literacy by helping to develop language and communication among other skills.

“Bluey” teaches children and parents alike about how play supports creativity — and other life lessons. One of the most engaging aspects of “Bluey” is its portrayal of parenting and family dynamics. The show depicts positive, supportive relationships between parents and children, highlighting the importance of parental involvement in children’s learning and development.

Through Bluey’s interactions with her parents, Bandit and Chilli, children observe the value of communication, curiosity, and creativity — all key elements for early literacy development. Moreover, the show’s emphasis on play as a vehicle for learning underscores the importance of hands-on, interactive experiences in early childhood education. By engaging families in those fun and interactive activities, the library seeks to empower children to become enthusiastic readers and curious learners from an early age.

The library’s Read Across America celebration kicks off on March 2 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with “Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss” and a day filled with all Seuss-related fun and activities.
