Johnson County Park renovations to begin in 2025

Plans for a significant expansion at Johnson County Park are awaiting final approval pending legal agreements.

The Johnson County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an agreement Feb. 12 with Studio Axis, an Indianapolis architect firm, for a new office space and camp store at the park in southern Johnson County. The enhancements, funded through a General Obligation, or GO, Bond aim to modernize amenities and accommodate a growing demand for recreational activities. $1.6 million has been budgeted for the project.

The new park office and camp store will offer essential camping supplies as a convenience for visitors. It will be a brand new amenity for the county parks department, Superintendent Kevin Leonard said in November.

In addition to the camp store and office, plans include upgrading the park’s amphitheater and adding new campsites to accommodate the growing demand. The project also includes the construction of a barn at Hoosier Horse Park to meet the escalating demand for horse stalls during events, Leonard said.

These improvements will help expand the park’s recreational offerings and enhance visitor experiences, he said.

Commissioner Brian Baird said the addition would be “really cool” for the county. However, the project’s final designs could change, he said.

“We don’t know if that is going to be the exact look, but it is going to be really good looking,” he said.

Construction will begin this spring, with completion expected between 2025 and 2026.
