Local stars named Academic All-State

Three Johnson County players were named to the Academic All-State first teams this week by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. First-team selections on the boys side included Whiteland’s Jazz Banwait, Joey Schmitz of Center Grove and Drew Kegerreis of Roncalli. On the girls side, Indian Creek’s Lauren Foster was chosen.

Earning honorable mention were Center Grove’s Will Spellman and Audrey Annee, Greenwood’s Jake Mosemann and John Ollanketo, Greenwood Christian’s Max Booher, Edinburgh’s Kyah Streeval and Roncalli’s Elijah Miller, Natalie Lehner, Aubrey Silcox and Taylor Turk.

Grizzly Cubs set indoor marks

Franklin picked up a handful of new school indoor records during Wednesday night’s Hoosier State Relays qualifier at the University of Indianapolis. Carson Sommers smashed his own standard in the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 6 inches, beating his former best by nine inches, while J.D. Sever went 8.61 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to best his former mark.

In the girls meet, Emma Bertel established a new shot put record (40-11), while the Grizzly Cubs also set new marks in the 4×200 (Sami Frazier, Aubrey Runyon, Madi Chase and Addie Martin) and 4×800 (Lauren Klem, Ainsley Botkin, Hannah Lindsay and Kathleen Lacy) relay events.

Women’s lax sets records in rout

Bella Frye set four new school records, including the mark for goals in a game with 11, as Franklin College routed St. Mary (Kansas) in its home opener on Wednesday. Mia Turnbaugh added six goals and four assists for the Grizzlies (1-1), Jillian Schlieper scored four times and goalkeeper Jamie Schlieper made four saves.
