IDEM seeking comments on Thompson Mill Dam removal

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is seeking public comment and information on any impacts to water quality related to the Thompson Mill Dam Project in Edinburgh. The town is seeking water quality certification as required by the Clean Water Act to remove the dam. Edinburgh officials OK’d the removal of the dam at a town council meeting last November after the dam burst in October 2023.

Any person or entity who wishes to submit comments or information relevant to the project may do so by April 5. Only comments or information related to water quality or potential impacts of the project on water quality will be considered by IDEM in the certification process.

Any person may submit a written request that a public hearing be held to consider issues related to water quality in connection with the project. The request should be submitted before April 5 to be considered timely. The request should also state the reason for the public hearing as specifically as possible to assist IDEM in determining whether a public hearing is warranted.

Additional information may be obtained from Project Manager Jake Brinkman by phone at 317-306-8995 or by email at [email protected]. All correspondence should be addressed to the project manager with the project’s identification number. The identification number for the project is 2024-102-41-JLB-A.

Written comments and inquires may be forwarded to IDEM at 100 North Senate Avenue.

Approximately 342 stream miles will be reconnected with full removal, according to IDEM.
