Trojans roll in county tourney opener

Class 4A No. 4 Center Grove made quick work of visiting Edinburgh in the first round of the Johnson County tournament, cruising to a 20-0 victory on Tuesday evening. Jordan Jaramillo was the winning pitcher for the Trojans (5-0), who are scheduled to host the tourney semifinals and final on Saturday afternoon.

Tuesday’s other first-round games were both postponed after heavy rainfall rendered grass fields in the area unplayable. Greenwood will play at Whiteland today at 5:30 p.m., while Indian Creek will now host Greenwood Christian on Friday. The Woodmen-Warriors winner will face Franklin in one semifinal, while the GCA-Creek winner will take on the host Trojans.

As expected, the IHSAA’s new reclassifications for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years will move Greenwood down from Class 4A to 3A in girls volleyball and both boys and girls basketball. According to the new lists released by the IHSAA on Tuesday, Greenwood will be the second-largest 3A school in those sports behind Logansport.

The Woodmen will remain in Class 4A for football and in 3A in both boys and girls soccer. Classifications for baseball and softball will be finalized at a later date, as will new sectional alignments in all sports.

Franklin College senior Caileigh McCafferty was named as the HCAC’s Female Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year, becoming the first two-time honoree in league history.
