Letter to the Editor: Voters need more than talking points

To the Editor:

In the Opinion section of the March 26, 2024 issue of the Daily Journal there is a piece by Niki Kelly titled “Time for gubernatorial candidates to get real on issues.” I agree with much of what Ms. Kelly asserts about our gubernatorial candidates’ propaganda.

It is all straight from the national GOP playbook and these issues actually have little, if anything, to do with the lives of average Hoosiers. They are simply slogans.

However, I disagree with Ms. Kelly on what issues seem most relevant to the citizens here. Her list includes road funding, Medicaid, taxes, the death penalty, education, and health care. What she leaves out are two very big hot-button issues that many people would base a vote on, which are abortion rights and marijuana legalization.

I certainly hope the Democrat candidate — which looks to be Jennifer McCormick — takes advantage of this by exploiting the abortion ban and the legalization of marijuana in states all around us, causing Hoosiers to spend potentially millions in those states instead of adding to our tax revenue.

Also, a commitment by the candidates to education should be clarified as a commitment to public education, not private charter schools.

And lastly, the death penalty. That’s an issue? Seriously?
