Flood Warning in effect until Thursday evening

A Flood Warning is in effect through 5 p.m. this evening for Johnson County.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says the Flood Warning is in effect for several central Indiana Counties, including Johnson. It was issued because urban area and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues, the agency said in an weather warning statement Thursday morning.

At 11:51 a.m., Doppler radar indicated heavy rainfall, with between 1.5 and 3.5 inches of rain having already fallen. Meteorologists say flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the warned area, and streams are continuing to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall.

People should expect many areas of slow moving or standing water as it will take several hours for all the water from these storms to work through local drainage systems in urban areas, according to the weather service.

With flooding people should stay informed, get to higher ground, obey evacuation orders, practice electrical safety and avoid flood waters. People should not drive into flooded roadways or around barricades. A vehicle caught in swiftly moving water can be swept away in seconds; 12 inches of water can float a car or small SUV while 18 inches of water can carry away large vehicles, according to the NWS.

The agency also asks the public to safely report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass the information onto the NWS.
