Track and field

Warrior girls win Mid-State title

Whiteland’s girls claimed the title at the Mid-State Conference meet at Plainfield on Tuesday evening, outpointing runner-up Franklin, 169.5 to 114. Elnora Stevenson led the way for the Warriors with first-place finishes in the 200 meters and the long jump while also teaming with Annibelle Gilbert, Marissa Kratowicz and 100-meter champ Sydney Rodgers to win the 4×100 relay. Victoria Jackson was also a double individual champ, taking the 800 and 1,600. Matthew Wray won the 400 meters for the Whiteland boys, who finished sixth.

Franklin’s girls got a sweep of the 100 and 300 hurdles from Aubrey Runyon as well as a victory from Addie Martin in the high jump. For the fifth-place Grizzly Cub boys, J.D. Sever was first in the 300 hurdles and joined Riley Flora, Joseph Jackson and Ethan Elsner on the victorious 4×400 relay.

Greenwood’s boys and girls both finished fourth but had several event winners. Emma Gardner won the girls discus and shot put, Amy Luttrell took the pole vault and the quartet of Nataley Quintero, Kendall Adams, Lilly Rollings and Makena Cruse won the 4×800 relay. For the boys, Will Riley was victorious in the 100 and 200 while also taking the 4×100 relay along with Amare Middleton, Benjamin Hommell and Gunner Ruppert. Brayden Hafen was first in the pole vault, and the 4×800 team of Jake Squier, Henry Barrett, Sam Cassel-Bertolet and Samuel Grimes also earned a win.

Whiteland gets past Decatur

Makenna Reed’s single plated Adeline Hamm with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Whiteland pulled out a 6-5 win over Decatur Central on Tuesday. Kiley Sullivan was 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Warriors (9-7, 4-5 Mid-State).

Grizzly Cubs defeat Artesians

Aubrey Leugers delivered a home run and five RBIs as Franklin picked up a 12-5 victory over Martinsville. Adeline Blackwell had three hits for the Grizzly Cubs (10-9, 4-5 Mid-State), while Sara Small, Paige Buntin and Charlee Cramer added two apiece.

Trojans shut out Flashes

Riley Janda homered twice and drove in five runs, helping Class 4A No. 10 Center Grove roll to a 13-0 win at Franklin Central. Brynn Meyer had a triple and three RBIs for the Trojans (12-6), while Hannah Haberstroh scored four runs. Pitchers Riley Henson, Riley Fuhr and Taylor Barrett combined on a two-hitter, striking out eight without a walk.

Baseball

Lancers outslug Spartans

Edinburgh used an eight-run sixth inning to secure a 13-7 triumph at Southwestern on Tuesday. Jared Myers drove in four runs for the Lancers (9-5-1, 3-3 Mid-Hoosier), while Avynn Whitaker, Milas Burkman, Brayden Schoettmer and Cole White each contributed two RBIs.

Woodmen fall to Pioneers

Greenwood lost against Mooresville, 10-3, despite two hits apiece from Cade Kelly and Jackson Simms. Ethan King and Jayden Pierce each drove in a run for the Woodmen (6-9, 4-3 Mid-State).

Warriors beat Decatur Central

Whiteland scored four first-inning runs and stayed on top the rest of the way for an 8-3 home win over Decatur Central. Brody Williams and Kayden Wilson drove in two runs apiece for the Warriors (10-5, 6-3 Mid-State), while pitchers Drew Helton and Peyton Dickens combined to strike out 12 Hawks.

Girls tennis

Center Grove blanks Panthers

No. 14 Center Grove coasted to a 5-0 win over Bloomington South on Tuesday. Sloane Small, Emerson Donaldson and Peri Small won their singles matches in straight sets for the Trojans, and the two doubles teams — Ava Beecher and Lauren Dick at No. 1, Kenna Harbin and Anna Runkle at No. 2 — did the same.

Warriors cruise past Hawks

Whiteland was a 5-0 winner over Decatur Central, winning all five matches in straight sets. Candace Stephenson, Rowen Starns and Taylor Darnell took the singles points for the Warriors (8-10), Cathy Nguyen and Kinsey Shipp won at first doubles and Namjeet Kaur paired with Karley Hoagland for a victory in the second spot.

Boys golf

Trojans win North/South Cup

Fourth-ranked Center Grove posted a 291-315 victory over Carmel in the North/South Cup on Tuesday. Brody Holubar and Noah Parsetich each shot a 71 for the Trojans, with James Beetz close behind at 72. Nathan Springer rounded out the Center Grove scoring with a 77.

Greenwood edges Decatur Central

Dru Norton’s 45 in the fifth spot broke a 169-169 tie and lifted Greenwood past Decatur Central. Co-medalist Kalen Rowland led the Woodmen with a 38, followed by Barden Chase (42), Jahlen Burton (44) and Davis Arthur (45).

Boys volleyball

Whiteland sweeps Martinsville

Whiteland defeated Martinsville in three sets on Tuesday, 25-22, 27-25, 25-22. The Warriors improve to 16-12 on the year.

Franklin College

Women’s tennis falls in HCAC quarters

Franklin College traveled to Hanover on Tuesday for the quarterfinal round of the HCAC tournament and saw its season come to an end with a 7-2 loss. Ailyn Hendricks and Maecee Terhune were an 8-3 winner at first doubles for the Grizzlies, while Michiah Draper rallied for a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 victory at No. 6 singles.

Baseball suffers home loss

Visiting Webster took an early lead and pulled away for a 13-4 win over Franklin College on Tuesday. Adam Taylor and Garrett DeHart each had two hits and an RBI for the Grizzlies (18-18).
