Letter to the Editor: Baseball an underappreciated sport

To the Editor:

I would like to commend David Carlson on his recent article titled “Play Ball!” As a lifetime baseball fan, I get tired of people telling me that baseball is boring. I grant you that the game sometimes moves slower than other major sports. However, there is constantly something going on during the game that most people don’t recognize or know about.

In addition, professional baseball doesn’t do a good job of explaining what is happening. Recent changes in the rules — for example, base size, pitch, batter clock, et cetera — make the game faster but don’t help people appreciate the game strategy. Baseball is a beautiful game if only the sport were better understood.

Thanks for your insight.
