Officials approve lowering speed limits on sections of County Road 144

Drivers traveling on two sections of County Road 144 in Bargersville will see lower speed limits soon.

The Johnson County Board of Commissioners approved in a 2-0 vote lowering speed limits on two sections of County Road 144 in Bargersville on Monday. For the first section, the speed limit from 50 mph to 40 mph on County Road 144 between County Road 400 W., also known as Saddle Club Road, to where the speed limit drops to 30 mph to the east, between Sawyer Walk Boulevard and Schoolhouse Lane.

For the second section, the speed limit would be set at 45 mph on County Road 144 between County Road 450 W. and County Road 400 W. It is currently 50 mph in this section.

While the road sections are within Bargersville town limits, the county maintains them per an agreement with the town, Highway Engineer Daniel Johnston previously said. The new speed limits will match the speed limits that continue west toward Interstate 69, he said.

It also is for safety, especially with the opening of Kephart Park, Johnston said.

In response to comments from West about the need for a crosswalk from the park to the neighborhoods to the south, Johnston said a crosswalk is already in the works. It will have push-activated button sensors, he said.

In March 2023, county officials lowered the speed limit at the I-69 interchange from 45 mph to 40 mph at the request of the Indiana Department of Transportation. An engineering and traffic investigation on the design speed for the County Road 144 interchange recommended the maximum speed limit change to 40 mph. This change affected portions of County Road 144 from less than a mile out from the I-69 interchange roundabout going both directions.
