Indy man convicted of pointing gun in Greenwood road rage incident

An Indianapolis man was found guilty of pointing a gun at a driver during a road rage incident.

Jeremy Deshawn Haskett, 31, of Indianapolis, was convicted of pointing a firearm, a Level 6 felony, by a jury in Johnson Superior Court 3 on Tuesday. The jury deliberated for 11 minutes before returning a guilty verdict, according to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors say the victim reported that Haskett was weaving in and out of traffic and then stopped at a red light and wouldn’t go on March 16 in Greenwood. When the victim honked his horn and tried to pass Haskett, Haskett pointed a gun at them.

Greenwood Police apprehended Haskett at a nearby business shortly after the incident. Haskett had the firearm he used in the crime in the waistband of his pants, according to court documents.

When police confiscated the weapon, it was fully loaded with 20 rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber, prosecutors say.

The case was tried by Johnson County deputy prosecutors Stephanie Caraway and Maximilian Scholz. Jury members said that an eyewitness’ testimony was critical in their decision to convict the defendant, according to the prosecutor’s office.

“I’m very pleased with the fast and efficient work of our Greenwood police officers in apprehending this individual and with the skill and diligence of our prosecutors in trying this criminal matter to conviction,” Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner said in a news release. “Once again this case demonstrates that we do not tolerate behavior that someone might get away with elsewhere. If you endanger our citizens by pointing guns at them, you’re going to face prison time. Period.”

A sentencing hearing is set for 9 a.m. May 31. A Level 6 felony carries a sentence of up to 2.5 years in prison.
