Greenwood JV Color Guard recognized as state champions

Greenwood’s junior varsity color guard was recognized Tuesday for winning a state championship.

The 12-member junior varsity Greenwood Irish Guard team was named the Regional A Trueblood Division Champions during the Indiana High School Color Guard Association Contest earlier this year. The team was recognized by the Greenwood Community School Board at the start of Tuesday’s meeting.

“We’re very pleased and very honored to be able to present to you our state champions,” said Pam Wishmeyer, former color guard director and retiring teacher.

The JV team is made up of two sophomores, seven 8th-graders and three 7th-graders. They were competing against many high school teams to earn the top spot, Wishmeyer said.

“For them to come up No. 1 is quite an accomplishment,” she said.

Some of the students were learning how to spin for the very first time, and one student didn’t even know what color guard was about before joining the team, she said.

This is the only time the JV team has ever won a state championship, let alone placing among the top schools in the state, Wishmeyer said.

School board members and school administrators congratulated the team for their efforts Tuesday. Later in the meeting, Superintendent Terry Terhune also recognized the high school’s music department, the choir and band, who together earned the All-Music Total Department Award from the Indiana State School Music Association.
