Trafalgar optometrist earns lifetime achievement award

A Trafalgar man was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to optometry.

The Indiana Optometric Association presented Dr. James Hunter, O.D., with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented to an Indiana optometrist to recognize significant and long-lasting contributions to the profession of optometry. The award was presented at Indiana Optometry’s annual convention on April 19 at the Embassy Suites in Noblesville, according to the association.

Hunter has been instrumental in the growth of optometry as a profession in Indiana. He currently serves as the director of the Dr. James E. and Linda K. Hunter Laser and Surgical Care Center at the Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington. As a founder and co-owner of Eye Specialists of Indiana in Indianapolis, he practiced specialty cataract and eye disease treatment for more than 40 years and is certified by the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry, according to the association.

He has served on the Indiana Optometry Board since 2004 and is Indiana’s Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry representative. Hunter served as an IOA trustee from 1984-1989 and has received numerous awards including the Indiana Optometric Association’s President’s Citation Award in 1983, Distinguished Service Award in 1989, Meritorious Service Award in 1991 and 2021, and Optometrist of the Year Award in 2011.

Through his visionary leadership, he has devoted his life to educating future generations of optometrists, ensuring the delivery of quality vision care, according to the association.
