Needham Fire seeks help identifying attempted fuel thief

Needham Fire officials are seeking the public’s help in identifying a person who reportedly tried to steal fuel from one of their stations Thursday.

At around 5:13 a.m. Thursday, an individual allegedly tried to take some of the fuel supply for the Needham Community Volunteer Fire Department at Station 81, 6822 E. County Road 350 North, Needham. The fuel supply is “mission critical” for the fire department that serves the Needham community and Clark Township, officials said.

“As your local fire department, we do our absolute best to serve you in any and all ways that we possibly can; but we can’t do that without fuel to put in our fire trucks,” the department said in a Facebook post.

No fuel was able to be taken as a secondary locking mechanism was installed on the tanks. No fire personnel were on site at the time of the incident as they were at Station 82, officials said.

The entire incident was captured on security cameras at the station. Footage shows a gray or silver truck pull up to the gas tanks, and a person, who appears to be wearing gloves, unsuccessfully trying to open the tanks over a span of about three minutes before giving up and leaving.

If anyone recognizes the individual or the truck, they are asked to report it to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office via their crime tips line at 317-346-4654.
