Seven more candidates file for school board candidate seats

More candidates are filing for school board seats as the filing deadline approaches.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, seven more candidates have filed since May 24. The total number of candidates who have filed is now 10.

New filings are:

  • Vernon S. (Butch) Zike, Jr. — Clark Pleasant School Board At-Large
  • Brett Jones — Franklin Community School Board, City of Franklin
  • Jared L. Hoesel – Franklin Community School Board, City of Franklin
  • Sheila Martin — Greenwood Community School Board, District 3
  • Charity Flores — Center Grove Community Schools At-Large
  • Rob Daniels – Center Grove School Board At-Large
  • Cathy J. Hamm (incumbent) — Edinburgh Community Schools At-Large

Earlier in May, Greenwood school board incumbent Chris Zaborowsky filed for reelection for the District 3 seat, meaning a contested race has now been established for the seat with Martin’s filing. Peggy Daeger, who previously ran for an at-large seat in 2022 but was not elected, has filed for the District 1 seat currently held by Deanna Burton, who has not yet filed for reelection.

In Franklin, incumbent Kristi Ott filed for reelection for her city of Franklin seat on the school board.

Fourteen total seats are up for election across the county’s six public school districts this fall:

  • Center Grove School Board At-Large — 2 seats
  • Clark-Pleasant School Board: Pleasant Township — 1 seat
  • Clark-Pleasant School Board At-Large — 1 seat
  • Edinburgh School Board At-Large — 2 seats
  • Franklin Community School Board: City of Franklin — 2 seats
  • Franklin Community School Board: Franklin Township — 1 seat
  • Greenwood Community School Board: District 1 — 1 seat
  • Greenwood Community School Board: District 3 — 1 seat
  • Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson School Board: Nineveh Township (only Nineveh Twp. votes) — 1 seat
  • Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson School Board At-Large — 2 seats

Prospective candidates have until noon June 20 to file for these seats.

To run for school board, candidates must live in a township that is on the ballot, or if running for an at-large seat, live within the boundaries of the school district. Candidates must also collect at least 10 signatures supporting their campaign, the forms for which can be picked up and dropped off at the Johnson County Clerk’s Office in the basement of the courthouse, 5 E. Jefferson St., Franklin.
