Bargersville Police recover stolen car after southside police chase

A Franklin man was arrested Wednesday after a police chase in Marion County.

Jimmy R. Smith, 30, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement using a vehicle, theft of a vehicle and criminal trespass.

A white Ford F-350 was stolen from a residence in southern Johnson County at 12:45 on Wednesday. At approximately 1:30 p.m., Bargersville Police located the vehicle heading northbound on I-69 near Southport Road, police said in a Facebook post.

The officer initiated a traffic stop where the vehicle initially complied but later took off northbound on I-69. A dashcam photo shared with the Facebook post shows the truck literally burned rubber during the chase, as there was a fire emanating from the area of the back tires.

The pursuit continued until the vehicle experienced “major mechanical failure” near the intersection of I-69 and Epler Avenue, police say.

Police saw the stolen vehicle pull into a nearby business before the suspect fled on foot. The officer engaged in a foot pursuit and apprehended the suspect shortly after, police say.

Smith

The driver, who was identified as Smith, was taken into custody without further incident, police say.

Smith has fled from police several times in the past decade, most recently in 2020 when his charge was elevated due to his status as a habitual offender, according to online court records.

In April, Smith was also charged with escape for tampering with an ankle monitor he wore in connection to the sentence from 2020.

He hasn’t been formally charged in the Wednesday incident and the escape charge is still pending in the court system.
