John Albert Mason

GREENWOOD

A cherished Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather passed away on June 4, 2024, at the age of 88, at Franciscan Health Hospital. He was born on July 24, 1935, to the late Albert and Blanche Mason.

John is lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Lorene (Hanselman) Mason; Daughter Pamela (Mark) Prather; Son Gary Mason and his long-time companion Kathryn Koger; grandchildren, Shelly (David) Scott, Tyler (Kori) Mason, Matthew (Leia) Prather, and Valerie (Trent) VanBever; great grandchildren, Austyn and Lona Scott, Winston VanBever, and Annelle Mason, step grandchildren; Mercedes, Coltyn and Lexus Scott. John also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Mason, his brother Richard and sister-in-law Gladys Mason.

He graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1953, Indiana State University in 1957 and received his master’s degree from Indiana University. John taught at Southport high school for 7 years and then went on to work at IPS-Facilities Management as a supervisor. Retiring after 37 years of service.

John served on Greenwood City Council, was a member of the Jaycees and helped in starting Gateway Learning Center in Franklin, IN. He was also a member of Southport Masonic Lodge No. 270 F. &A.M., Indianapolis Valley of the Scottish Rite, and the Murat Temple. A lifetime member of NRA and also the Indiana Retired Teachers Assoc.

Sports was a passion of John’s. He was an avid fan of IU basketball, Cincinnati Reds and the Colts. John Mason’s life was one well lived, and he will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 13, at 1:00 PM at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory- Greenwood Chapel. The family will receive guests at the funeral home Thursday, June 13, from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
