GREENWOOD

Joan H. Jones, 93, passed away June 12, 2024, at the Waters of Chesterfield Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born December 30, to Chester and Alma Hook Helt of Elizabethtown.

She graduated from Columbus High School, class of 1949. She married her high school sweetheart, Merrill A. Jones, April 11, 1952. She studied nursing at the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and became a licensed Registered Nurse in November of 1952. She and Merrill were married for 51 years before he passed in 2004. She was a devoted wife and mother and supported Merrill’s passion for missions and reaching others for Christ. She ministered to others through her passion for nursing. She held private duty nursing positions and served as a County Health Nurse in Jennings County but was a loving nurse, caregiver, and mother-figure to everyone who needed her. She tirelessly served, fed, loved, and prayed for countless people who came through her door. It didn’t matter whether they were neighbors, friends of her kids, missionaries, or recently out of prison, she never failed to show them the love and compassion of Christ.

She loved being Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma, Great-great grandma, Aunt Joan, and a friend to so many who knew her. She had previously held membership at North Vernon Baptist Church but was a member of Southport Baptist Church for over 40 years where she served in almost every capacity. She was an avid garage sale-er and collector but was best known for her teapots. Her collection easily reached 2,000 teapots and she shared her love and knowledge of them through Teapot Shows. She established a lifelong tradition of having special tea (hot chocolate) parties with her grandchildren, making unforgettable memories.

She is survived by three children Michael M. Jones (Debra) of Greenwood, Joyce E. Jones-Myers (Roger) of Anderson, son-grandson Darryl T. Jones (Kelly) Murphysboro, IL; grandchildren Matthew and Elizabeth Jones; great-grandchildren Isaiah and Ruth Jones, Addison McClure, and great-great-granddaughter Zara Grace Crowden-Jones.
