Joseph “Joe” A. Acker Sr.

GREENWOOD

Joseph “Joe” A. Acker Sr., 88, of Greenwood, passed away on June 18, 2024. He was born on July 6, 1935 in Indianapolis to the late John Baptist Acker and Loretta Gertrude (Eck) Acker.

He was a member of Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church, but was raised and went to school at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Cub Scout Master, a member of the P&E Model Railroad Club, and the Coast Guard Auxillary.

He was a chemist and foreman at Western Electric for 25 years, after retiring he started selling real estate.

Joe loved spending time with his family, gardening, collecting model trains, completing crossword puzzles, playing chess or cards, and he was a voracious reader.

Joe leaves behind to treasure his memory, his wife of 62 years, Ruth Ann (Risch) Acker; children, Mary (Mike) Monfreda, Joseph (Nichole) Acker Jr. and Steven (Elizabeth) Acker; grandchildren, Dawn (Jack) Calvert, Kevin Monfreda, Anthony Monfreda, Ryan (Ashley) Acker, Zachary Acker, Greg (Amber) Acker, Izabel (Quenton) Puente, Emily Acker, Carlie Wickey, and Jordan Wickey; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Rosemary Fox and Charlotte (Dan) Manning and sister-in-law, Roseann Acker and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three siblings, Harold Acker, Robert Acker, and Bernice Scifres.

The family will receive friends and family from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at G. H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home, 1605 S. State Road 135, Greenwood.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1530 Union Street Indianapolis, with additional visitation from 10:30 until the time of the Mass.

He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
