Clarification: Watershed assessments on property tax bills

A clarification is needed on a story published Tuesday titled, “Residents seek answers on watershed update.”

In the story, it is stated that many property owners do not realize they are paying a watershed assessment because on property tax bills it’s listed as one of the miscellaneous taxes under “other.” This is technically correct, but not completely accurate.

The first page of a property tax bill doesn’t list the watershed assessment rate, and it is classified as other. However, the second page of the bill is more detailed and does list the watershed name and assessment amount. It can be found under Table 4 near the bottom of the statement.

County Commissioner Kevin Walls, a member of the Johnson County drainage board, informed the Daily Journal of this on Tuesday after he learned the assessment was on the second page of property tax bills.
