David Robert Thompson

WHITELAND, IN

David Robert Thompson, 73, died on Monday, June 24, 2024, at Community South Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Whiteland, IN.

David was born March 6, 1951, in Kokomo, IN. His parents were Chester Harris Thompson and Margaret Hannah (Newby) Thompson. He married Susan Kitch on August 20, 1978, in Morgantown, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother, Mae Marie and Gene Harris.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; sisters, Marian Mills and Carolyn Thompson of Kokomo, IN; daughters, Brooke (Angel) Fuentes of Greenwood, IN, and Brette (Keenan) Mack of Fort Wayne, IN; and granddaughters, Isabella Adelita Fuentes, Eleanor Jane Mack, and Vivian Elizabeth Mack.

David grew up in Kokomo where he attended Union Street Friends church and spent a significant amount of time working in the parks department with his father, particularly with the fast and slow-pitch softball leagues. He graduated from Kokomo High School in 1969 where he participated in band, football, track, and wrestling. He was the recipient of the WIOU Athlete Award for 1969. He graduated from Indiana State University where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity.

David spent the entirety of his career, spanning 39 years, as an Industrial Technology teacher at Clark-Pleasant Middle School where he met his wife. He was an active member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and a member of the Whiteland United Methodist Church. He took profound joy in coaching football and wrestling. He enjoyed lifelong connections with his fellow coaches and the athletes he worked with over the years. He was inducted into the Indiana Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010.

After retirement, he continued to volunteer with the WCHS wrestling program, was elected to the Clark-Pleasant School Board in 2020, and relished spending time with family and attending his granddaughters’ school events.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Jessen Funeral Home &Simple Cremation ~ Whiteland Chapel followed by a graveside service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, Indiana.
