INDOT to hold hearing on southside US 31 sidewalk project

The Indiana Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting for a southside U.S. 31 sidewalk project next month.

The proposed project will install Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps on both sides of U.S. 31 from County Line Road to Thompson Road in Johnson and Marion Counties. The project will also include minor drainage improvements and a signal improvement at U.S. 31 and Shelby Street.

The meeting will allow the public to interact with the project team, view project-related materials and discuss the schedule. INDOT officials will also provide ways for the public to stay informed and provide feedback.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. July 9 at the Southport Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library, 2630 E. Stop 11 Road. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to allow the public to view displays and talk with project personnel prior to the presentation.

The project is currently in the preliminary design process, which includes environmental investigations and preliminary design. This phase will last for approximately six months before the final design and right‐of‐way acquisition process begins.

Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2026. The maintenance of traffic plan will involve temporary lane closures during construction.

With advance notice, accommodations will be provided at the meeting for persons with disabilities. Accommodations will be provided for persons of Limited English Proficiency requiring auxiliary aids including language interpretation services and document conversion.
