John Herald “Jack” Schier Jr.

GREENWOOD, IN.

John Herald “Jack” Schier Jr., 92, of Greenwood, IN passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, IN.

He was born March 17, 1932, at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, IN to John Herald Schier Sr. and Gladys (Stout) Schier. He married Judith Ann (Martin) Schier on June 13, 1953, in Southport, IN; she preceded him in death on October 19, 2020.

Jack attended University Heights grade school and was a 1950 graduate of Southport High School. He attended Purdue University mechanical engineer classes and Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis).

From the age of a young man, he took piano lessons, carried newspapers, worked at Carl Heidinreich florist during the summer while in high school, he was a member of the Boys Scouts of America receiving his Eagle Scout, served as a Master Counselor of DeMolays, played piano in a dance band in the summer of 1951, and also with Jack Riser and Edie Lou Ruginstein at various organizations.

Jack was drafted into the United States Air Force in 1952 having trained pilots and crew in how to do aerial recon. He was honorably discharged in 1956.

He was a long-time member and elder at Greenwood Presbyterian Church.

After the service, he and his wife lived in the Fountain Square of the Indianapolis Southside and later in 1957 built their first home in Greenwood, IN.

He started his professional career with Allison’s as a draftsman, later at Borg-Warner, then known at Stewart-Warner at a draftsman. In 1961, he started working at RCA in Indianapolis as a draftsman and in 1967 was promoted to Manager of Engineering of the coil shop where prototype parts were required to make color TV’s operational. He retired from RCA in 1992.

After retirement, he started working at Smock Golf course in Indianapolis, IN where he was a member until his passing. Jack enjoyed playing golf and earned the Senior Champion four times.

Survivors include his children Marci Bennett (Shell) of Trafalgar, IN, Eric Schier (Beth) of Franklin, IN and Kurt Schier (Jennifer) of Greenwood, IN, ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and a daughter-in-law Valerie Schier of Greenwood, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a sister Donna Joann Schier, his daughter Cindy Smith on January 15, 2012, a son Mark H. Schier on June 10, 2021, and one great-grandson.

Pastor Peter Zinn will conduct a memorial service on Friday, July 5, 2024, at 3PM at the Greenwood Presbyterian Church, 102 West Main Street in Greenwood, IN followed by military honors being conducted by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive guests from 1PM until service time at the church.
