Here’s what’s going on with I-69 the week of July 29

Interstate 69 is approaching the finish line on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

The new interchange at I-69 and Interstate 465 is scheduled to open next month on the southwest side of Indianapolis, completing the interstate connection between southwest and central Indiana. Initial work began at the new interchange site in 2022 as part of the I-69 Finish Line project, which upgrades more than 26 miles of State Road 37 to interstate standards through Morgan, Johnson and Marion counties.

I-69 Finish Line is the sixth and final section of the I-69 connection between Evansville and Indianapolis.

The new interchange consists of two flyover ramps connecting I-69 and I-465 just west of the existing State Road 37/Harding Street interchange. South of I-465, newly constructed I-69 diverts from the current path of State Road 37 north of Edgewood Avenue. State Road 37, north of State Road 144, will officially become I-69 upon opening of the interchange, according to an Indiana Department of Transportation project update.

Ahead of the opening of the interchange, drivers can expect increased construction activity in and around the I-69/I-465 system interchange in anticipation of opening to traffic. Construction work will continue at and near the system interchange through the end of 2024, INDOT officials say.

In the meantime, westbound I-465 between Interstates 65 and 70 will be reduced to one lane with 20-minute stoppages nightly Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for bridge beam delivery and placement. This single-lane condition is expected to cause delays, so drivers should use an alternate route if possible.

The westbound I-465 exit ramp at Mann Road (Exit 7) was closed last Friday, and will remain closed for up to 60 days for pavement reconstruction in westbound lanes. Motorists needing to access Mann Road from westbound I-465 should exit at Kentucky Avenue/State Road 67 (Exit 8), according to INDOT.

As for I-69, drivers should expect a single-lane closure on southbound I-69 between Teeters Road and State Road 44 in Morgan County between 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday for paving work.

All road work is weather-dependent. More information about the project can be found at I69FinishLine.com.
