Candace “Candy” (Poindexter) Treibic

FRANKLIN, IN.

Candace “Candy” Poindexter Treibic passed quietly into heaven on July 25, 2024. She was surrounded by family who loved her and admired her enormous dignity in the face of a long battle with cancer. She never whined or cried and was a pleasure to be around despite regular pain and discomfort. The staff at Compass Park Skilled Nursing loved her for her quiet and undemanding demeanor with all requests always preceded by “please” and followed by “thank you.” Candy was always a refined lady, despite the battle for her life.

Candy was born on February 18th, 1943 in Evansville, IN to Marlan and Ellen Poindexter. She was a sister to brothers John and Christian and sister Julia. The family grew up in Oden, Indiana where they were well known for their academic excellence. Candy was always very proud of the family achievements: Brothers John and Chris were high school class valedictorians. Candy was class co-valedictorian and Julie also graduated with honors. John and Chris graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and 1960 and went on to become very successful in their chosen fields. Julie graduated from IU and had a distinguished career as a special education and elementary education teacher. Candy graduated Magna Cum Laude from Franklin College, one C grade in Math and Logic short of Summa Cum Laude. She got all A’s in graduate school – no surprise. While at Franklin College Candy was a proud member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and a member of many academic honorary societies.

Candy and her husband, Don, met at Franklin College in 1962. They were married in May of 1965 and were married for over 59 years. During their marriage, they had three wonderful children: Adam (56), a banker, and his wife Damesia of Franklin, Indiana; Paul Treibic (55), a teacher, of Franklin, Indiana and Christine Holcroft (49), also a teacher, and her husband Curt of Franklin, Indiana. Candy became an FC librarian in 1984 and remained at FC for 24 years, retiring in 2008. Upon retirement, Candy became a volunteer teacher’s aide in Christine’s classroom at Isom Elementary in Greenwood. She loved the first graders, and they loved her. She remained in that position for seven years and reluctantly retired again due to significant health issues. She spent her remaining years reading, tending her flowers, and enjoying the many events of grandchildren.

Candy loved her grandchildren Emma Treibic, Eran Treibic, Lauren Holcroft, and Luke Holcroft. They all called her Dindy, a name that was given by Emma when she was about two years old and was passed on to the other grandchildren. Candy loved the uniqueness of the name and carried it proudly to the day of her passing. There was nothing Candy would not do for her grandchildren and didn’t mind if they knew it. Beyond the grandchildren, she loved her animals, and she loved cooking for her family. She also loved her flowers, her landscaping and her yard where everything had to be just perfect to suit her taste. That love was passed on to her children who are now avid gardeners. Candy was also a very passionate IU basketball fan; you didn’t want to disturb her while she was watching an IU basketball game and she didn’t take kindly to anyone criticizing Bob Knight: she was loyal to a fault.

Candy led a long and good life and will be missed by the many people who cared for her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Poindexter-Treibic educational scholarship fund at Franklin College.
