EPA to hold open house for Amphenol cleanup

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, will be holding an open house next week to answer residents’ questions about the cleanup and construction work at the Amphenol/Franklin Power Products site along Forsythe Street and Hamilton Avenue.

The open house will be from 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Franklin Branch Historical Room of the Johnson County Public Library, 401 State St. Residents will be able to meet with EPA staff and learn about the work being done at the site.

The EPA began oversight of barrier installation to reduce contamination concentrations in groundwater at the site on July 15. The project’s goal is to break down remaining contamination. Crews are installing “permeable reactive barriers” along Forsythe Street and Hamilton Avenue to treat affected soil and groundwater, according to the EPA.

The cleanup and construction work is anticipated to take one to two months, and there will be long-term monitoring of groundwater after construction is completed.
