JCPL Column: Back-to-school with JCPL’s kid-friendly resources

You’ve bought the new backpack, crayons, pencils, glue sticks, notebooks, colored pencils and erasers … but don’t forget the most important school supply: your library card!

Long gone are the days when libraries only housed books. If you have a library card, you have access to a whole new world of materials, resources and experiences. From 3D printers to STEAM kits to study rooms, the library is your destination for academic success, learning and exploration. As a librarian, I am here to help you find all of the resources you need.

First, if you’re in search of academic resources, the Johnson County Public Library has your back. We have a variety of developmentally appropriate books for even the littlest of readers. Our librarians can help parents locate leveled reader books according to reading systems used by our local schools, as well as beginning phonics and Science of Reading decodable books. One of my greatest joys is helping young readers find books they are excited to read! Whether that’s picture books about unicorns or science fiction novels, there is truly something for everyone at the library.

For online readers, we provide access to eBooks and audiobooks via Libby, hoopla and cloudLibrary. With your JCPL card, you can inspire your child’s love of reading with animated picture books on Tumblebook Library and early learning games on ABC Mouse.

Advanced students can take advantage of the Learning Express Library, which helps teens study for the ACT, SAT or AP tests. Have a research paper in need of sources for? Take a look into ERIC, Biography Reference Center and or Academic Search Complete! You can find links to these resources and more at PageAfterPage.org/research.

Maybe you need internet access or a printer for your studies. JCPL has desktop and laptop PCs for use in the library. Our popular mobile hot spots can also be checked out for Wi-Fi on the go. Printing services are available for a small fee. Send your printing job using your device or visit a JCPL Branch. Visit PageAfterPage.org/wirelessprinting to find out more about how to print at a library branch.

As a librarian, I love connecting our community members to educational experiences that make learning a joy. JCPL has a variety of programs for kids of all ages. Come by the library after school to continue learning through STEAM, social-emotional, or fun arts and crafts programming. We even have new “Tween Maker Carts” loaded with tools, crafting supplies, reusable building items and fidgets for our tweens visiting the Library. For homeschoolers, we have special programs to connect them with other families while they are learning something.

As another school year starts, public libraries are a cornerstone of support and inspiration for students of all ages. With its wealth of resources, from books and databases to educational programs and knowledgeable librarians, the library is an invaluable partner in fostering a love of learning.

Encourage your children to explore these resources, as JCPL provides a world of opportunities to assist their educational journey. Embrace the new school year with confidence, knowing that JCPL is here to help every step of the way.
